BEREA Trevon Coley Color Rush Jersey , Ohio (AP) — Mike McCarthy’s connections with the Browns could land him his next job.Dumped by Green Bay on Sunday after 13 seasons, a Super Bowl win and amid a seemingly growing rift with quarterback Aaron Rodgers, McCarthy’s candidacy to become Cleveland’s next coach has gotten more legitimate. The 55-year-old McCarthy was already being mentioned as a possibility for the Browns, who dismissed Hue Jackson last month and will wait until after the season before hiring his full-time replacement. As far as center JC Tretter is concerned, the Browns couldn’t go wrong with McCarthy.“I’ve always enjoyed working with Mike McCarthy,” said Tretter, who played four seasons under McCarthy before signing as a free agent with Cleveland in 2017. “I think what he has done in his career in Green Bay has been extraordinary. I think he’s a great man, too. I don’t have a bad thing to say about Mike McCarthy. He was really an awesome leader and an awesome coach.”McCarthy is no stranger to the Browns.General manager John Dorsey, who has revamped Cleveland’s roster and is leading the team’s coaching search, spent 21 years as an executive in Green Bay and helped hire McCarthy. Browns assistant GM Eliot Wolf, son of former Packers GM Ron Wolf, worked in Green Bay’s scouting department for 14 years, and vice president of player personnel Alonzo Highsmith was with the Packers for 19 years before he was hired by Dorsey.Tretter said he can’t provide any more information to Cleveland’s executives about McCarthy than they have already.“They know enough upstairs,” Tretter said. “They got Eliot and Alonzo and they’ve got other guys from the Green Bay organization. I don’t think I can bring anything more to the table than they already know. They were with him longer than I was and they were upstairs with him more than I was downstairs with him, so I think they know everything they need to know. I’m just looking forward to seeing the direction we go with this team.”Dorsey hasn’t revealed much about his plans to hire Cleveland’s 17th full-time coach — and sixth in the past 10 years.Interim coach Gregg Williams, who took over for Jackson, will be interviewed; Dorsey has not disclosed who else is on his list. Oklahoma coach Lincoln Riley has been mentioned as a possible candidate along with Kansas City offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy, Minnesota offensive coordinator John DeFilippo, and New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels among the most prominent names being mentioned. It will be tough for any candidate to have a resume as impressive as McCarthy’s.He went 125-77-2 in 13 seasons with the Packers, leading them to a Super Bowl title in 2010. However, Green Bay has struggled the past two seasons, missing the playoffs last year for the first time since 2008.The Packers are 4-7-1 this season, with McCarthy’s relationship with Rodgers becoming a weekly drama around the team.Tretter knows both men well, and said any of differences have been exaggerated.“That whole story line gets a little overblown,” Tretter said. “They are just two competitive people and I think they are both competitive in the same direction in that they both want the team to win. They just are very confident in what they think is best for the team to win, so I never really interpreted it as a bad thing.”Cleveland’s coaching gig has never looked so attractive.Rookie quarterback Baker Mayfield has shown signs of being the franchise QB the Browns have coveted for years https://www.brownsfanshop.com/Duke-Johnson-Jersey , and any coach who comes to Cleveland will be required to further develop him.Tretter feels McCarthy would be ideal for Mayfield.“They would do great, he said. “He started working with Aaron when Aaron was a rookie, too, and Aaron’s developed into a hell of a player, so I think that relationship would be fine. I see a lot of similarities between Aaron and Baker personality-wise, competitiveness, and that’s all the things that Aaron came in with, too, when he was a young player, so I think they’d work well together.”NOTES: S Denzel Ward remains in concussion protocol after getting hurt in Sunday’s loss to Houston. … DL Larry Ogunjobi (biceps) said he doesn’t think his injury is serious. Williams said Ogunjobi was still undergoing tests. … The Browns did not put a claim on former Chiefs running back Kareem Hunt, waived Saturday after a video showed him shoving and kicking a woman at a Cleveland hotel. Dorsey drafted Hunt in the third round in 2017. CLEVELAND (AP) — The Titans ignored all the hoopla about the ballyhooed Browns, and maybe made some hype of their own.Marcus Mariota threw three touchdown passes — one a backbreaking, 75-yarder on a screen to big back Derrick Henry — and Tennessee rolled to a 43-13 rout Sunday over Cleveland, which fizzled in its highly anticipated opener.Titans tight end Delanie Walker had two TD catches in the fourth, and Tennessee’s defensive backs intercepted Baker Mayfield three times in the final 15 minutes.Article continues below ...Walker was one of several Titans who grew tired of the pregame attention paid to the Browns.“You all can crown them if you want to crown them,” Walker said. “We still have to play football.”Before reporters were allowed into Tennessee’s locker room, several loud cheers could be heard in the outside hallway as coach Mike Vrabel handed out game balls.“It’s really all about us,” Mariota said. “All the outside noise, all those things that people say you can’t control. We don’t focus on that at all. It was a great team win. All across the board.”Cameron Wake sacked Mayfield in the end zone for a safety in the first half, and the Titans dominated the undisciplined and perhaps overblown Browns, picked by some to contend for a Super Bowl title after adding Odell Beckham Jr.“You have to make plays, so things the crowd doesn’t agree with, like sacking the quarterback or taking the ball away, cornerback Malcolm Butler said. “It’s all about momentum.”The Browns committed 18 penalties for 182 yards, a poor reflection on first-year coach Freddie Kitchens. Cleveland also had starting left tackle Greg Robinson ejected for kicking Titans safety Kenny Vaccaro. The performance left Cleveland fans wondering if they’ve been duped. The Browns are 1-19-1 in openers since 1999.“We lost our discipline and we lost our composure, but it is one game and we are going to be tested Greg Joseph Jersey ,” Kitchens said. “You either take adversity and run toward each other or you run away. We have a bunch of guys who are going to run toward each other and we are going to be fine. It is one game. I do not care. It counts on the scoreboard, but each game counts one time.”Following the game, Mayfield had X-rays taken and he left FirstEnergy Stadium with his right wrist wrapped. X-rays were negative. The Titans always seem to be overlooked, but after just missing the playoffs last season, Vrabel had his team ready.Mariota finished 14 of 24 for 248 yards, completing his two scoring passes to Walker in a span of 3:29 of the final quarter when the Titans opened a 23-point lead.“He was composed,” Vrabel said of Mariota. “He got us into all the right plays. They were pressuring, and some of those things weren’t easy. It wasn’t perfect. He will tell you he missed some throws, but he competed.”Mayfield, who took several big hits while playing behind a patchwork line, brought Cleveland within 15-13 with a 3-yard TD pass to David Njoku. But the Titans countered immediately as Henry, who sat out the preseason with a calf injury, took a short pass, picked up a few blocks and rumbled down the sideline for the long score.“I knew going in we had an opportunity with that play,” Mariota said. “We just hit it. I knew if I could get the ball to Derrick he was going to have a chance. When you get that guy in space he’s tough to tackle.”Kevin Byard picked off Mayfield moments later, and Mariota connected with Walker for an 11-yard score. The three-time Pro Bowler was making his return after suffering a season-ending broken leg in last year’s opener.Mayfield was then picked for the second time and Tennessee’s Logan Ryan led the entire defense to the far end of the field, where they taunted Cleveland’s rabid Dawg Pound section.Mayfield went 25 of 38 for 285 yards, with his last throw returned 38 yards for a TD by Malcolm Butler. Beckham finished with seven catches for 71 yards in his Cleveland debut.KICKED OUTThe first half was a mess for the Browns, highlighted by Robinson’s ejection. Robinson was on the ground during a running play when he extended his leg and drilled an unsuspecting Vaccaro.“We do not tolerate that,” Kitchens said. “That is unacceptable.”LINE CHANGEThe Titans were down two starting offensive linemen as Pro Bowl left tackle Taylor Lewan served the first game of his four-game suspension for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs and right guard Kevin Pamphile was inactive.FOR KICKSTennessee’s Cairo Santos, signed earlier this week, made two field goals, from 53 and 37 yards. Santos was brought in after Ryan Succop was placed on injured reserve.INJURIESBrowns: RB Dontrell Hilliard left with a concussion in the first half. … Lamm never returned after going down. … TE Demetrius Harris left briefly with a right shoulder injury.UP NEXTTitans: host Indianapolis on Sunday. The Colts won both meetings last season by an average of 22 points.Browns: visit the New York Jets on Sept. 16 in matchup of first teams to play on Monday night.
